Take Your Time

Another important tip online is to simply take your time when you play online poker.  On most websites, each player has a certain amount of time to act on their turn, but you can act sooner and it simply won’t register until it’s your turn.  Resist that urge.  For example, if you have the option to fold, don’t hit the button until it actually is your turn.  Otherwise, you might find yourself locked into doing something that you wish you hadn’t done.   Just take your time.

Blinds

Getting Started

Texas Hold’em involves playing a series of ‘hands’ or ‘deals’ with a new ‘pot’, or amount of money contributed by the players, with each new ‘deal’. The overall goal is to win as much money as possible. Though technically this means winning as many pots as you can, realistically it is almost impossible to win every hand. Instead the goal is to properly calculate the correct amount to bet or to raise as well as to determine when it is appropriate to fold or to call in order to minimize expected losses. Though chance and luck does play a role, there is a lot of skill involved in making the right calculations to maximize your return and minimize your losses. The ability to do this is what differentiates good players from bad ones.

The specific rules of each game differ depending upon the organizer of the game. Generally speaking, a player’s ‘position’ – or his position in relation to the other players at the table – determines the sequence of play, with the dealer playing the last position and the person to his left playing the first position. The sequence of play then proceeds clockwise around the table. The initial bet may be made through blinds (based on position) or by an ante (a minimum contribution by each player) depending on the rules in force. Usually there are no jokers or wild cards in Texas Hold’em, but there are assorted variations that may allow them.

Although many people disagree with this notion, there is something to be said for aggressive raising. The player that comes to dominate the table during the pre-flop period goes on to win the round eighty percent of the time, so early raising may be worth considering. Further, assuming you are mixing up your play well, it is a good way to exploit tight players who will be intimidated by your aggressive raising.

This does not, however, mean that you should play too loosely as other advanced players will recognize this and play accordingly. Nevertheless, if you feel you have a reasonable chance and it is appropriate in view of the other players at the table, consider aggressive raising.

For example, assuming you have a $2000 bankroll, you should be playing at the $1-2 No Limit games with a maximum buy-in of $100. The next level, $2-4 No Limit, will require a bankroll of $4000 with a max buy-in of $200. As you are grinding your way to the $2-4 poker game, you could reach a level where you have a bankroll of $3000. Thus, you could take a one-time shot at the bigger game with $400.
You don’t intend to keep playing at that level unless you reach the $4000 bankroll limit, but the single shot may help you get there. However many shots you take, you should never let your bankroll fall below standards for playing in your current level.You could try your luck and skill in the upcoming WSOP Tunica 2010 event that will begin in this month and see for yourself that these methods work.

“Shot Roll” Management

One way to manage how to take these shots is to set aside a small portion of each win. This “shot roll” should be built up until the amount in the roll is equal to the buy-in needed to play in the bigger game. Thus, from time to time, you will be able to take these shots to move up to a bigger level more quickly. A good idea is to set aside 10% of all winnings. To use the previous example, in the $1-2 game a solid win would be $200, so after 10 solid wins, you would have built up enough money in your shot roll to take a shot at the $2-4 game.

While this money is never actually removed from your entire bankroll, the idea is that you create a mental separation between your shot money and your day to day bankroll. Also, using this method will always ensure you never endanger your bankroll by playing above acceptable limits. The danger with taking shots is when people continue to play at the higher level without having an adequate bankroll. This method will easily prevent that from happening.

Playing Real Poker

Although you have a little time to play “real” poker at the start of a turbo, it won’t last long. Pretty soon you won’t have to worry about making decisions after the flop, turn or river. Your decision will simply become fold or all in pre-flop, or sometimes post-flop.

Unlike the next big world series of poker tournament which soon to be held in Harrah’s Tunica – The WSOP 2010 Event – Turbo Sit n Go tournaments are much the same as regular turbo tournaments, except that they usually only consist of one table. So, they go at incredible speed. You really have to have your wits about you when you play a turbo SNG.

Turbo Bankroll

Early in a turbo you may be able to make a pre-flop raise, as mentioned above, without going all in. Still, though, if you do, you need to be able to keep enough chips to be able to back up your bet later in the hand. Otherwise, you could find yourself up against a wall.
