If you like to play poker, but have never played online, you need to know one thing. There are going to be some differences, especially in how the game feels, in general. So, it’s important to have some unique strategies for online poker play. If you don’t adjust your strategy for online play a bit, you’re in for a big surprise when you sit down at your computer to play. Here are some strategy tips to follow that should help you to get started as an online player.

Take Your Time

Another important tip online is to simply take your time when you play online poker. On most websites, each player has a certain amount of time to act on their turn, but you can act sooner and it simply won’t register until it’s your turn. Resist that urge. For example, if you have the option to fold, don’t hit the button until it actually is your turn. Otherwise, you might find yourself locked into doing something that you wish you hadn’t done. Just take your time.

Started way back in 1996, it has more than seven million subscribers as of right now. And the numbers are just multiplying with more and more players discovering the challenge and excitement of playing poker online. From private and public tables to varied difficulty level tables, this website has a game for every need and skill.

Blinds

If you like playing in tournaments, you need to understand the concept of blinds and antes. All through the game, players continue to raise these in keeping with the hand they have been dealt. Make note here that the player sitting on the left side of the dealer button is called the small blind. The player sitting to the left of the small blind and to the right of the dealer button becomes the big blind.

Tournament divisions

All tournament play is divided into two categories – the ‘sit & go’ poker tournament and the multi-table tournament. In the sit and go, as many as 10 players can sit at the same table. The tournament starts as soon as everyone is seated. Players can sit randomly and the winner does not take all. Since stakes are high, money is also given out to the runner-up players. Once the tournament is finished, it can resume only if the winner wishes to continue. In the multi-table tournament, players are given selected seats across several tables by officials who also decide the starting time, the length of the rounds etc.

Contrary to popular belief, Texas Hold’em is very much a game of skill – not just of luck. Players who are experienced and skilled at the game often bring the big bucks home from the casino or even from online gambling websites. In fact, some people have been able to quit their jobs due to winning so much and so frequently at poker games Texas Holdem. Even if you’re not trying to go pro, there are still some tips that can help you rake in the big money.

Know Your Opponets in poker games Texas Holdem:

No matter where you play Texas Hold’em, you should be aware that the house or the casino is not your opponent. The casino makes money from the rake, so they have no interest in who wins the game. This is good for you, as other games are often made intentionally difficult to prevent the house from losing too much money. With Hold’em, all you have to do is beat the other players.

If possible, observe a few games before joining in. Try and decide if the players are about your same skill level, below your skill level, or above your skill level. If they’re above, you probably won’t want to join in on the game, but be aware that you can learn a lot of helpful tips and tricks just by watching them play.

If the players seem to be evenly matched with you or especially if they are below your skill level, you’ll want to jump right into game play. Be sure to concentrate and not lose your focus. Also, do not become overly confident, as this can often lead to bold and sometimes stupid moves.

You first have to realize that with poker games Texas Holdem , you are not playing against the house but against the other players. The house will make money from the rake, so it doesn’t matter to them who wins the game. This is good for you, because you are not there to make the casino money. You are simply there to test your skill against another player’s.

Playing for Money:

You can win more money playing No Limit or Pot limit Texas Hold’em than you can playing Limit Texas Hold’em. More money always goes into these games, so there’s simply more money available to win. In fact, you can often win three times what you’d win in a limit game in just one game of No Limit or Pot Limit Texas Hold’em.

Tournaments are another option, but you need to do a good assessment of your skills before signing up, as these are also an easy way to lose a lot of money. Tournament players tend to be very seasoned or even professional, so you’ll want to be sure that you know where you stand and that you can hold your own against these pros.

Online poker sites have started a trend that has caught on like wild fire. The convenience of playing poker without even having to step out of your house is indeed very fascinating. These sites operate round the clock and allow the players all types of facilities and bonus points, which makes these poker sites even more interesting.

While it is true that online poker is somewhat different from real time poker, it does not take too much to learn the strategies when you play online poker games. It is advisable though that one starts to play the smaller stakes when learning to play poker online. There are a few sites that offer online poker absolutely free. Of these free sites ‘casino on net’ is one of the leading ones.

Casino on net is not only a free site; it also offers its players the option of choosing from several play online poker games. There are all types of stakes and variations offered and depending on personal choice one can make a selection.

The rules of online poker on this site are pretty much the same as other poker sites. There is a dealer button and the player on the right of this button is known as a high blind while the dealer on the left is known as the low blind. All players begin with equal number of chips and the game continues till one player has won all the chips of the others. Needless to say the bets, raises and flops all constitute to make these games very interesting, much like in the real world.

The site also offers tournament play. These games have many more players and are highly exciting. There are two main types of tournament; one is the ‘sit and go’ while the other is a ‘multi table’ tournament. The former is a game of 10 players that are all seated in a random fashion. The game begins as soon as the players take their place. Here the winner gets the booty of course, but the runner up is also able to take some money home. This is why this game is stress free. In the latter tournament, the game is tighter and there is only one winner. The game begins at a pre- set time and the seating of the players is also pre organized. Needless to say this game can get pretty nail biting since here the pressure to win it all is immense.

Irrespective of the type of game you choose to play or the site you choose to play on, keep in mind that you must never bet more than you can afford to loose. Online poker uses chips instead of real money and the temptation to bet more sometimes takes over the realization of the amounts that you may be betting. The hope that you will win it all back can ruin you. So play online poker games keeping in mind that you may loose it all and therefore may not enjoy the experience at all.

Now that you understand some poker basics, let’s look at the World Series Of Poker. What is it? Well, it has grown, since it began in the 1970’s, to become the biggest collection of poker events held annually. It all culminates in the WSOP Main Event each year in Las Vegas, Nevada. The winner of that event gets a prestigious gold bracelet. They also win a cash prize which is based on the number of people who enter the tournament.

Improving The WSOP:

To illustrate how much the WSOP has grown, let’s compare the year 2000 to the year 2008. In 2008, there were 6,844 entrants. In 2000, though, there were just 512. Since the prize pool is based on the number of entries, that means that the prize pool jumped from about a million and a half dollars to over nine million dollars.

Another great change to the WSOP format came when Harrah’s Entertainment bought Binion’s Horseshoe Casino, in 2004. That began a new tradition of playing the Main Event just down the Las Vegas Strip a little way, at the Rio. It also marked the start of a Tournament Of Champions event. Harrah’s is, of course, known world-wide as a leader in gaming and entertainment.

The Internet And The WSOP:

Finally, the WSOP has been steadily growing thanks to advertising, particularly on the Internet. Thanks to the age of Internet gaming, more and more people of all ages and backgrounds are logging on and playing poker. That includes playing in WSOP satellite events. So, the World Series Of Poker (poker.wsop.com) is steadily growing and shows no signs of slowing down. If you want to play the most famous games in poker, you have to play in the WSOP.

Texas Hold’em replaced Seven Card Stud as the most popular variation of poker in the world in the 2000s, due in large part to the televising of the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour. This period also coincided with the rise of online poker, so many of fans of Texas Hold’em have never actually played a live game before. The game offers all the basic options of any poker variation, such as betting, bluffing, and winning combined jackpots.

Getting Started

Texas Hold’em involves playing a series of ‘hands’ or ‘deals’ with a new ‘pot’, or amount of money contributed by the players, with each new ‘deal’. The overall goal is to win as much money as possible. Though technically this means winning as many pots as you can, realistically it is almost impossible to win every hand. Instead the goal is to properly calculate the correct amount to bet or to raise as well as to determine when it is appropriate to fold or to call in order to minimize expected losses. Though chance and luck does play a role, there is a lot of skill involved in making the right calculations to maximize your return and minimize your losses. The ability to do this is what differentiates good players from bad ones.

The specific rules of each game differ depending upon the organizer of the game. Generally speaking, a player’s ‘position’ – or his position in relation to the other players at the table – determines the sequence of play, with the dealer playing the last position and the person to his left playing the first position. The sequence of play then proceeds clockwise around the table. The initial bet may be made through blinds (based on position) or by an ante (a minimum contribution by each player) depending on the rules in force. Usually there are no jokers or wild cards in Texas Hold’em, but there are assorted variations that may allow them.

In line with keeping your table image confused and unpredictable, you also want to play your hand accordingly. Do not play a primarily loose or primarily tight game; instead, mix it up a lot in order to keep everyone guessing about your next move. If you set yourself up as being a loose or tight player, other advanced players will recognize it and begin playing you. Instead it is a much better idea to play your hand according to its merits, while also playing a few hands opposite to the conventional wisdom in order to help confuse people that are trying to measure your play. For example you can play good poker hands in the early positions and loosen up as you go around the table and play random hands in the early stages of the game before the raises begin.

Although many people disagree with this notion, there is something to be said for aggressive raising. The player that comes to dominate the table during the pre-flop period goes on to win the round eighty percent of the time, so early raising may be worth considering. Further, assuming you are mixing up your play well, it is a good way to exploit tight players who will be intimidated by your aggressive raising.

This does not, however, mean that you should play too loosely as other advanced players will recognize this and play accordingly. Nevertheless, if you feel you have a reasonable chance and it is appropriate in view of the other players at the table, consider aggressive raising.

As your experience and playing ability grows, naturally you will begin to move up to games with higher stakes. One way to speed up this process is by taking shots. The term taking shots refers to the act of a single attempt to play a higher stakes game than your bankroll calls for. The distance between required bankroll levels makes these shots possible.

For example, assuming you have a $2000 bankroll, you should be playing at the $1-2 No Limit games with a maximum buy-in of $100. The next level, $2-4 No Limit, will require a bankroll of $4000 with a max buy-in of $200. As you are grinding your way to the $2-4 poker game, you could reach a level where you have a bankroll of $3000. Thus, you could take a one-time shot at the bigger game with $400.
You don’t intend to keep playing at that level unless you reach the $4000 bankroll limit, but the single shot may help you get there. However many shots you take, you should never let your bankroll fall below standards for playing in your current level. You could try your luck and skill in the upcoming WSOP Tunica 2010 event that will begin in this month and see for yourself that these methods work.

“Shot Roll” Management

One way to manage how to take these shots is to set aside a small portion of each win. This “shot roll” should be built up until the amount in the roll is equal to the buy-in needed to play in the bigger game. Thus, from time to time, you will be able to take these shots to move up to a bigger level more quickly. A good idea is to set aside 10% of all winnings. To use the previous example, in the $1-2 game a solid win would be $200, so after 10 solid wins, you would have built up enough money in your shot roll to take a shot at the $2-4 game.

While this money is never actually removed from your entire bankroll, the idea is that you create a mental separation between your shot money and your day to day bankroll. Also, using this method will always ensure you never endanger your bankroll by playing above acceptable limits. The danger with taking shots is when people continue to play at the higher level without having an adequate bankroll. This method will easily prevent that from happening.

One of the more popular online game types is the turbo poker tournament.A turbo poker tournament is a short tournament where the blinds are raised quickly. The format of a turbo often forces quick thinking and high betting. So, if you play a turbo, you need to be prepared to go all in (bet all your chips) fairly often.

Playing Real Poker

Although you have a little time to play “real” poker at the start of a turbo, it won’t last long. Pretty soon you won’t have to worry about making decisions after the flop, turn or river. Your decision will simply become fold or all in pre-flop, or sometimes post-flop.

Unlike the next big world series of poker tournament which soon to be held in Harrah’s Tunica – The WSOP 2010 Event – Turbo Sit n Go tournaments are much the same as regular turbo tournaments, except that they usually only consist of one table. So, they go at incredible speed. You really have to have your wits about you when you play a turbo SNG.

Turbo Bankroll

Early in a turbo you may be able to make a pre-flop raise, as mentioned above, without going all in. Still, though, if you do, you need to be able to keep enough chips to be able to back up your bet later in the hand. Otherwise, you could find yourself up against a wall.
