Blackjack for Beginners

Blackjack has long been one of the most popular card games at a casino. Whilst it is easy to play it is harder to master. Learning strategies and what to do and not to do is a must when it comes to improving your game. The following will outline just a few of the things that can be done to go from beginner to expert.

Firstly it is important to understand the basic rules. Blackjack is a game between just the dealer and the player which is why live games can be so thrilling. Each player is dealt just two cards with the aim of reaching a high score of 21. Going over that score results in a bust, however the winner doesn’t necessarily need to reach 21 but simply to have an end value that’s higher than the dealer’s. A third card can be drawn if the initial hand doesn’t make the required number or result in a bust in an attempt to reach 21. Once these basics are mastered it is then time to move onto strategy.

As a first timer, your best shot is to start with a single deck table. Less cards, less to memorize and therefore an increased chance for a win. These days many tables will play with multiple decks in order to thwart card counters but there are still single deck tables out there. It is also prudent to start off at a low stakes table until you have been able to get the flow of the game.

Next it is important to pay attention to house rules. Blackjack rules will vary slightly between casinos so it is important to note whether a dealer will hit on a soft 17 for example, or whether doubling down is acceptable. These can make a huge difference to a game and it is well worth understanding what these game plays will mean for you.
